Campaign against inflationary grocery prices

Greek society, consumers and salaried employees are amazed as food inflation and the consumer price index skyrocketed in Greece affecting the prices of most products and services On the other hand, basic consumer needs are now covered with great difficulty by the average household, since the price changes are huge.

The workers and consumers are in despair, having reduced their food and living needs to a bare minimum, making access to quality and safe food and household necessities difficult.

The GSEE Consumer Workers Union has been flooded with messages from consumers complaining about rising inflationary prices and profiteering. The inability of the Greek State to limit the exorbitant price increases in basic goods and services, as well as the absence of any reliable control mechanism to deal with the phenomena of profiteering or cheating and misleading the consumer public, exacerbates the problem and consumer despair.

Necessary actions are:

  • Substantial market monitoring and controls
  • Reduction of excise duty imposed on energy prices
  • Reduction of VAT on food items and basic household items
  • Wage increase and strengthening the purchasing power of worker-consumers
  • Substantial support for vulnerable households

The Union of Working Consumers of Greece has taken the following actions in order to deal with inflationary prices, and prevention of social exclusion:

  1. Cost monitoring and price control of food items and items of basic needs of the Greek households
  2. Control for the implementation and effectiveness of the Household Basket, Law 4986/2022 and the permanent discount of 5% regarding the access of vulnerable households to food items and items of basic needs of the Greek household
  3. Informing and raising awareness of Consumers through radio-television interviews, useful tips and online information campaigns to deal with rising food cost  and healthy eating on EEKE’s information channels
  4. Collection and distribution of foodstuffs to vulnerable social groups
