The event of General Confederation Of Greek Workers /GSEE and the Union of Working Consumer of Greece/ΕΕΚΕ titled “Excessively high prices-How the profits of greedflation multiply prices from farm to fork” has a huge success.
The meeting was attended by numerous administrative members of General Confederation of Greek Workers/GSEE, representatives of Greek trade unions and working consumers. The event was honored with their presence by the Member of Parliament for Eastern Attica PASOK – KINAL Manolis Christodoulakis and the Mayor of Nikaia – Ag. Ioannis Rentis Konstantinos Maragakis.
The President of General Confederation of Greek Workers/GSEE greeted the EEKE event, presented the Confederation’s spot on refinement and outlined the action plan of general confederation of Greek workers, compared with refinement, as decided at the recent General Council.
The General Secretary of the General Confederation of Greek Workers, referring to the findings of the recent studies of GSEE Labor Institute and general confederation of Greek workers, emphasized that the working class does not beg.
Working class demands from the Greek Government to protect workers and consumers by calling for the reinstatement of minimum wage determination by the social partners so as to counteract the wave of generalized greedflation and suppliers/retailers profiteering.
The conclusions from the discussion with the producers and representatives from the Plant and Animal Fund are summarized in the following concluding statements:
- Lack of strategic development planning on the part of the Greek State and absence of a meaningful dialogue with farm and industrial producers
- Need for further development of cooperative organization
- Lack of essential checks by the control mechanisms of the Greek State (e.g. during the stage of importing products, the path of the products from the farms to the retailer shelf, determining the selling price of the products to the final consumer)
- High production costs and lack of employees
- Reduction of subsidies by 50%, resulting in the loss of producers’ purchasing power by 33%
- Reduction in the number of producers, especially for cattle breeding
- Illegal methods of renaming imported food products as produced or originated in Greece
- Price Speculation in various phases of food supply chain to the consumer
All of the aforementioned findings, increase the risk of the collapse of the primary farm sector with very serious effects on the food supply chain.
The President of the Union of Consumer Workers of Greece, summarized the conclusions from the conference, pointed out the fact that greedflation and supplier profiteering, which has spread in all sectors of the supply chain, directly affects the average consumer who has reduced the consumption of basic food items in 2023-2024. He formulated with examples the real situation that prevails in the market from farm to fork, where products are sold 4 and 5 times higher than the original selling price from the producer He also hoped that such meetings of workers and producers would be repeated in the future, so that the battle for the establishment of an embankment against the inflation of profiteering would be fought together.
Finally, the President of the General Confederation of Greek Workers overemphasized the demands of the 17th April Strike, in his second “agenda”.
