The school training programs for the prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) have been completed by the Union of Working Consumers of Greece with greater participation than expected. These trainings aimed to improve the knowledge of younger generations on health issues, specifically the prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases through education on healthy eating habits and childhood obesity.
Through this initiative, students gained knowledge about the concept of NCDs and understood their connection to a healthy lifestyle, especially healthy eating habits. The training programs focused on warning against excessive sugar consumption and its impacts on childhood obesity, and provided knowledge about reading food labels and packaging.
The schools where the training programs were implemented are:
- Elementary School of Intercultural Education of Alsoupoli
- 21st Elementary School of Athens “Lela Karagianni”
- Intercultural High School of Athens
- 23rd Elementary School of Athens
- 27th General Lyceum of Athens
In European countries, NCDs significantly burden the public health systems of the Member States. The rising rates of NCD-related deaths in Europe are alarming, but although widespread, the complex health issues they cause can be addressed by improving preventive measures and promoting health.
Healthy eating is a key element of our lifestyle and can help combat the rise of NCDs. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats is essential for our overall health and reduces the risk of chronic diseases.
The Preventia project aims to reduce the spread of NCDs across the EU, decrease health inequalities, and promote cooperation and exchanges among EU member states. It is implemented with partners SAFE, LCI, EEKE, CEIP, Promote Ukraine, Amici Obesi, and U.DI.CON., and is co-funded by the EU.
